Mission Statement

To plan and hold a year-long series of programs and events designed by the Mission Hill community that acknowledge and embrace our diversity as a strength while bringing into focus the aspects of diversity that divide and hold us back;

to encourage thoughtful discourse and shared learning leading to enhanced individual and community awareness and acceptance;

to develop enlightened approaches together that will help us work toward mutual understanding, stronger community and a new reliance on one another.

Background

The vision for the Harmony On The Hill initiative was conceived as the 20th anniversary of the murder in Mission Hill of Carol DiMaiti Stuart approached. The aftermath of the 1989 murder was tragic for the DiMaiti family and for individuals and families in the Mission Hill community who lived through the racially charged aftermath. The ensuing investigation and intense national media coverage helped create a climate of fear and suspicion and tarnished the reputation of a proud community.

One year after the murder, The DiMaiti family responded to this outrage by establishing a scholarship fund for Mission Hill youth and the community came together to hold the memorable “Mission Hill in Harmony” concert at the Mission Church which raised $20,000.00 for the scholarship fund.

January/February 2010 - Neighborhood Discussions

Currently, eight small meetings are being held with residents in the various neighborhoods within Mission Hill. Issues related to diversity are topics for discussion.

1. What is your vision for Mission Hill?
2. How has Mission Hill changed in 20 years?
3. What do we need to focus on to make your vision a reality?

Ideas gathered from these meetings will help inform the focus of a community planning workshop to be held soon after.

April 3, 2010, 10:00am - 2:00pm - Workshop
Community Planning

A large community wide planning workshop will be held at the Tobin Community Center where residents of Mission Hill will develop the initiative’s priorities which could include ongoing racial dialogues, fundraising for scholarships, community-police seminars, a 20th anniversary concert or other ideas for activities identified by attendees. September 25, 2010, 6:00 - 8:00pm - 20th Anniversary
“Mission Hill in Harmony” Concert
